At our Gold Canyon D.O.G. –Dog Owners Group-
March meeting we had a wonderful guest speaker, our own Sandie
Smith, Pinal County Supervisor for District 2. Sandie has
been a supporter of an off-leash doggie park in Gold Canyon from
the beginning, back in October of 2002.
Some of the issues that Sandie addressed were as follows:
Harold
Christ has donated the land behind the Yacht Club for open
and park space. It is currently still at the title company. The
DOG group, the land owner, and the county need to work with the
surrounding citizens and Home Owners Associations (HOA’s)
for usage of this open space.
She mentioned
that another possible location for the off-leash dog park would
be on the land behind the Dinosaur Park and meetings will begin
with the school district to see if this is possible. Of concern
is the amount of space available.
Sandie
also mentioned the importance of meeting with the Home Owners
Associations (HOA). She is willing to be present at the meetings
when necessary. D.O.G. will attend the Superstition Foothills
HOA meeting in March. The more people in the community that are
aware of our efforts to promote responsible pet ownership the
more the community will support us.
She suggested
that Jane Decker, Director for Pinal County Animal Care
and Control would be glad to be a guest speaker at our meetings.
Sandie
also suggested that our group sponsor events such as Vaccination
Clinics. Pinal County Animal Control will be available for such
events. This could be combined with organizations that sponsor
pet ID chips, etc
Sandie
was very impressed with the efforts of our group to “promote
responsible pet ownership.” She liked the idea of our donation
of a Dog Poo container to be installed at Dinosaur Park in the
next few weeks.
Sandie Smith appreciates our efforts
in helping find LOST dogs or in finding the owners of FOUND dogs
through our
program PAW Alert.
